A plot to
assassinate Ghana Football Association (GFA) president Kwesi Nyantakyi and one
of his close allies on the federation’s board George Afriyie has been uncovered
as killing operation is close to being carried out, a newspaper in the country
has reported.
The local newspaper The
Illuminator reported on Monday that an ex-convict from the Kumasi Prison called
Mr Lawson is among the six people who were contracted in Elubo to carry out the
killings.
Some of the names mentioned by the
newspaper are Moro and Abolo who are all ex-convicts who have been hired to
carry out the massacre in Winneba where they were supposed to have attended an
event two months ago.
A policeman was also fingered in the
newspaper report as the man to supply the weapons to carry out the killings.
According to the report, that
weapons and mobile phones have been distributed to death squads and that money
to pay them has been collected.
Nyantakyi and Afriyie are among
Ghana’s leading football executives and with elections for the federation
looming there are suspicions that this is part of the plot to eliminate the
popular among voters.
The newspaper has released few
details of the alleged plot, saying they did not want to jeopardise their
ongoing investigations but since the plot is at the stage of being carried out
preventative measures must be taken by the police.
The newspaper did not say who was
involved, how the plan was uncovered, or if anybody had been detained, but he
did give details about its origins.
The managing editor of the newspaper
Dennis Boateng told Happy FM’s sports programme he had proof of the plot which
is at the stage of it being carried out.
“Mr Lawson was called from Kumasi to
Elubo to join the group but he turned against the group and reported to our
newspaper the plot to assassinate the two leaders,” Boateng told Happy FM on
Monday.
